About Maxx Puppets

Based in South East Queensland, Maxx Puppets began creating unique characters in 2010.

We specialise in live action hand, one and two hand rod puppets, monsters, humans, inanimate objects and are always willing to take on a new challenge.

We know the joy and magic that exists in all our hearts and want to help bring that spark out in everyone through our creations whether they are for the young and budding performer or the seasoned puppeteer.

Owner and Puppet Builder

Maxx Puppets began as a spark in the eye of its owner Scott Richards.  His passion for puppets was ignited at an early age with such recognisable characters as Bert and Ernie, Mr Squiggle, Alf, and that talking bathmat, Agro.

He performed at his youngest brothers first birthday party when he was 9, using a fridge box to create a puppet theatre and miming along to some of the top hits of the late 80's.

Scott holds multiple qualifications in Early Childhood Education, Disability Services, Community Services and Aged Care and has always enjoyed entertaining and bringing a smile to the faces of the young and young at heart alike.

In 2017, Scott took a step from behind the curtain to centre stage to bring "Princeton" to life in Sunnybank Theatre Group's 2017 production of Avenue Q.

Puppet Appearances

Maxx Puppets characters have appeared at a variety of community events including school fetes, childcare centres, swimming school open days and Brisbane Supanova.  They have also appeared on Juiced TV which is filmed and broadcast at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane.

In 2015 Scott joined with the Brisbane Arts Theatre for their production of Avenue Q.  He was tasked with creating additional monster puppets to help "flesh out" the monster world as well as performing ongoing repairs on the main puppet cast.  He also created a singing American Fire Hydrant and a backing group called "The Divines" who were loosely based on The Supremes from the 1960s.

2017 will see Scott returning to Brisbane Arts Theatre for their production of Avenue Q with further new builds and repairs of other puppets before they tour Queensland during the year.

In June 2017, Maxx Puppets joined forces with Larrikin Puppets to help bring to life a pair of human puppets for Triple J Unleashed winner Tia Gostelow's music video "That's What You Get".  View here.

Our puppets continue to make appearances and new creations are sent out into the world to entertain theatre audiences throughout South East Queensland.
